The Pièce de résistance

Presently reading the acclaimed 'Autobiography of a Yogi' by Paramahansa Yogananda, I find myself in uncharted territory with a drawn feeling of how much more I need to strive in order to attain a level of self-realization which is a quart of what is talked about in this magnificent book!

It is a work of art like never before that I have ever encountered and is constantly helping me understand the deepest nuances of my life better than before with a singular view of how much life is a part of the whole exercise of evolving into a higher state of being and realm, which most of us ardently seek and yet fail to attain owing to focus on intellectual appeal and sensory judgements alone!

What strikes me most, even as I border close to just a half of the book, are the striking similarities that this book elucidates in it, also largely mentioned in the works of Dr. Brian Weiss, with respect to life itself and those of Carl Sagan with respect to his thoughts and deductions of the ever intriguing cosmos!

As if that wasn't already enough to stir my ordinary mind, beyond words and expression, the magical experiences detailed as a result of the author's process of attaining self-realization shook me off, challenging the earthly concepts of time, gravity, instances, all of which are a certainly delightful treat to any reader, food for thought, in the clichéd sense to say!

And as for my new-found realization that I have been toying for quite sometime now, I'd better best describe it with the aide of the famous words of the Greek philosopher Socrates which read that "True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing!"

The Alphabets Tag

Of late, my posts, many of you may have noticed, have been intense, heavy and subject to a certain trajectory path and hence, when Vee (a.k.a. Vivek) tagged me, I thought it apt for a deviation and saw a welcome change from the profound themes that certainly needed a short break.

So here we go.........

A – Available/Single?
Unavailable, Available, Unavailable, Available, Single ........... Currently Available, Single and ready to mingle ;)

B – Best friend?
A handful to count, by the grace of God!

C – Cake or Pie?
Neither! Not the sweet guy, errr, I meant the sweets guy!

D – Drink of choice?
Single malt scotch, mild beer and sometimes (rarely) Stolichnaya.

E – Essential item you use every day?
My PC and net enabled phone! A lot of my day is spent with the PC and the phone helps me catch up with a few dozen RSS feeds, emails and news feeds, while on the move. Can't imagine a life without technology!

F – Favorite colour?
Blue

G – Gummy Bears or Worms?
How about worms cooked in black sauce and served with peppered mayo? ;)

H – Hometown(s)
Ooty, Tamil Nadu and Kannur, Kerala.

I – Indulgence?
Of what kind? ;)

J – Jealous or Benign?
Benign, most certainly!

K – Kids & their names?
No kids, yet! Am scared when Mum repeatedly says "May you have kids just like you." Not sure if that's a blessing or a curse, though its reasonable to assume the latter, given my doings!

L – Life is incomplete without?
Folks, books, buddies and blogs!

M – Marriage date?
Good question! I read a facebook status message that said "I remember when I got married. I remember where I got married. But for the life of me, I can't remember why I got married."

N – Name? Your real name!
Rakesh and their derivatives Raku, Rak, Rock, Rocky and Raks...... all of which are real too!

O – Oranges or Apples?
Oh, this is about eating! I thought........

P – Phobias/Fears?
None! But ask my friends and they'd be sure to tell you about Rakesh-phobia!

Q – Quote for today?
Never do something unless you are sure of yourself, but never relinquish doing something because somebody is not sure of you!

R – Reason to smile?
As elementary as a bright sunny day, a Friday, the weekend and a lot more! The same cannot be said about a monday morning though!

S – Season?
Winter

T – Tag 3 People?
I'll leave this open

U – Unknown fact about me?
My alter ego and its demented thought process!

V – Vegetable you don’t like?
Perhaps this question should have been "Vegetables you like," for it would have been easier to answer "none"

W – Worst habit?
Hmmmm.., Should I risk stating that here? ;)

X – X-rays?
On eye glasses? ;)

Y – Your favorite food?
Nothing beats Dal & Chawal!

Z – Zodiac sign?
Virgo

Un nuevo comienzo (A new beginning)

A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.

Photography has always been a passion, one that I've been nurturing for a very long time now. It all began when an uncle gifted me a Kodak camera in the year 1992. I guess I inherited this passion from my Father who, during his youth, was an avid photographer himself, owning an underwater picture capable Minolta, which was an object of serious interest to me. Adventures with the automatic Kodak continued for many years until the digital revolution began. A very strong affinity to the spectacular outdoors accelerated the demand for a digital camera. Finally, after many years of non-digital imaging, I got myself a Kodak CX6200 2.0 mega pixel camera at a time when digital photography was at its very nascent stage in India. The device almost cost me an arm and a leg but I was overjoyed at the immensely shortened gestation time which went in between the click of the picture and its final development into a full size image. On all occasions, I found this annoying wait time stretch to light year proportions adding to a great deal of anxiety and frustration.

Immediately, this new-found joy accompanied me on every trek and trip that I undertook and brought back memories crystallized in scores of images. Steadily it made me a decent amateur in photography and taught me many nuances, chief of them being the management of light sources and subject focus!

Come 2006, I migrated from Oblivion Redefined (created in 2004), to this space which has since been cyber-home to my thoughts, images and ideologue. Back in 2004, Photobucket hosted my images which I then posted onto my blog manually! Thanks to ever improving technology, Blogger has an inbuilt facility to upload images, which are hosted by Picasa. My blogs are never complete without images that I shoot from time to time and this was the case back then too. Despite carefully examining at length many templates for Blogger, I wasn't quite satisfied due to the fact that the images posted were scaled down in size and quality. And the many templates that did offer retention of image quality and size, I wasn't quite interested in! Looking for change, I moved to Wordpress which I soon realized was the Linux of Blogs, lacking the user-friendliness of Blogger. My search continued until I chanced upon the Aminus3 Photoblog Community.

So then, as I begin a new endeavor, I want to introduce to all of you, Imaging Oblivion, My Photo Blog, where I will post from time to time, images that I have taken over the years. Do please visit it and observe your comments which will matter a great deal to me by being critical, constructive, appreciative and encouraging!

Opening Statements

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.

Anatole France

Venkatesh Jalaj a.k.a. VJ
, a good friend of mine, once sent me the following write-up, which proved to be an instantaneous source of immense inspiration and encouragement. He very rightly titled it "A question of Perspective." Upon reading it (something which I continue to do, every once a while), I came to learn that much of life's 'so called' hardships can be scaled down in effect by the manner in which we react! I'd like you to read this wonderful piece of work by VJ and take a look at your perspectives and alter them if need be, and most importantly feel inspired when the going gets tough. Read on..,

At times in life, one stops to re- examine if the steps one took were right or wrong. What seemed right then, may now seem wrong in hindsight. Listening to the advice of family members or people known to you may have turned out to be hideously wrong. Advice is free, but the consequences are not. The consequences are yours to pay.

Every person is responsible for his actions. At the end of the day, it’s your life. From my own life all I can say is this, learn to think for yourself. Have the courage to fight against people who oppose you. No matter how close or how dear they may be to you.

You should know your interests and how to stand for them. Being a martyr to someone else’s dreams or desires is no act of greatness, merely horrendous imbecility. With the courage of conviction, and an invincible faith in yourself and God set out on your path. The trials will be daunting, opposition trenchant and incessant. At times, you will want to give up. Energy may desert you, the mind may grow feeble. Despondency, depression and loneliness will be your constant companions. Yet, you will move on. Keep your mind open to changes, in people in circumstances. Learn to utilize both to your advantage. Learn to understand people, their strengths, weaknesses and ways of thinking. Do not look for acceptance, if you succeed it will come on its own.

Doors may close, opportunities turn into a mirage, faith may be betrayed but persevere. Slender may be the thread of hope, but remember it’s all you have when you are facing a crevasse.
Don’t let the thought of the rope snapping drive you to loosen your grip and plunge to destruction. Victory and defeat aren’t in your hands but if you consider yourself beaten, you are. No one, I repeat, No one can save a person from himself. Through the hours of struggle, the longer nights of loneliness, when you have none but your miseries to warm the cockles of your soul, do not let go. Convince yourself to face your sufferings, not by avoiding them, not by seeking to flee from dream to dream, not by seeking to escape from reality, but by looking them straight in the eye. Train all your energy to work as weapons in your struggle. Do not let the maelstrom of dedicated opposition weaken your resolve. Use your creative and other energies to fashion a new persona. The crucible of pain is unforgiving, but it produces the best steel.

Then one day, the clouds will part, the sun will shine through. It will never seem possible, yet it is your belief in its coming which will make it possible. It's power is awe-inspiring; your faith will give you the strength to reach it.

When the ordeal ends, your face bathed in the sunlight of success, of recognition, of acceptance, you will scarce believe that the struggle is over. Applause will follow, your life will change, and success will make all that happened seem a dream. The world will accept you as one of its own. The world loves the heroic story of the underdog who made it. His heroism is applauded, yet the same world excels at kicking the underdog while he was making the very same great story happen. When you look back at your path, you will wonder if all those lonely nights, those hopeless days were worth it. Others will have attained more than you would have and faced none of the problems you had to endure. Look at the faces which now smile at you in acceptance. Each one of these faces has experienced the beautiful afterglow of success. These faces have not faced the misery which you have faced and are the poorer for it. In order to appreciate the taste of sugar it is important to know the taste of salt. You have seen the different faces of human behavior and are the richer for it.

Now ask yourself the question again …………The answer is obvious.

Awarded

MultiMenon has been very kind to award me the 200% awesome web-blog award. I am very appreciative of this wonderful gesture of his which has come as tremendous encouragement and recognition. I'd like to roll-over this award to all of my fellow-bloggers for being the wonderful people that you are. Via this, I'd like to imply that each one of you has within yourself the power to motivate, innovate and excel. We may all be unique in our own right and measure, but the DNA that we carry within us is programmed to bring out the best in our thoughts and actions. We may adhere to differing schools of thought, but in the end, our purpose complies with the general good of creation and hence all of us, irrespective of our religion, caste, creed, colour, gender and other differences, are one and part of a single institution, the institution of human beings! This award is therefore a platform to celebrate who we are!

A hard teacher

Meaning is not something you stumble across, like the answer to a riddle or the prize in a treasure hunt!
Meaning is something you build into your life. You build it out of your own past, out of your own affections and loyalties, out of the experience of humankind, as it is passed on to you, out of your own talent and understanding, out of the things you believe in, out of the things and people you love, out of the values for which you are willing to sacrifice something!

The ingredients are there. You are the only one who can put them together into that pattern that will be your life.

Let it be a life that has dignity and meaning for you. If is does, then the particular balance of success and failure is of less account!

John Gardner

During a trek on January 01, 2004, I took this picture of what is a part of the Ketti Valley. It is easy to notice the completeness of nature which has a great sense of meaning. Like I said before, every part of nature makes tremendous meaning despite not being as eloquent as us human beings! We struggle and squirm to find a purpose without realizing that our existence itself is a first level of that purpose. Nature, very unlike us, is complete and isn't burdened by the onus of having to seek a purpose or define a meaning! We, on the contrary, spend time, effort and resources to attain a state of being while not realizing that that state is not a destination to arrive at but a manner of travelling!

A small measure of peace

One of the many perquisites of staying in Ooty is that one can enjoy the magnificence of nature to the fullest. There are many quick getaways that offer very spectacular views of the panoramic landscape. During one such expedition to Pykara, on November 11, 2004, I snapped these pictures of the small lake and the adjoining waterfall.

Much like still waters, life is sometimes calm and quiet without incident. But things change with time, quite like how the excruciating summer dries up even the deepest waterhole or how incessant rains cause a deluge leading to untold misery!

But, neither famines nor floods last long and the spirit of life comes alive with the passing season. We too, like the water, face many an obstacle! These impediments are meant to refine life and help us ascend continuously. In the end, life triumphs by being progressive, determined and consistent.

Consistency and determination are known to bring the best out of human beings. Despite these menacingly fixated rocks, the water gushes forward without a thought or apprehension! Nature is an ongoing process with a great deal of consistency, one that moves ahead with time irrespective of what comes to be! Shouldn't that be the way of life too?

Nature is a fantastic craftsman, for there is always a very high level of equilibrium in every part of it. A healthy balance is very essential for a conducive lifestyle. There is not a natural creation that you could attribute asymmetry to. Why, then, is there a great deal of incongruity in our lives? Are we not natural? Or is it that we choose not to be part of nature?

Vimal Vijayan a.k.a Vimmuuu gave me these awards and cited a distinction with some of the most kind words. I wish to thank him very sincerely for giving me these accolades, which make me feel truly honoured!

This award is given to a blog that invests and believes in PROXIMITY – nearness in space, time and relationships! These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in prizes or self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers! Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award.

As is custom, I will roll out these awards to eight fellow bloggers who have been significant motivators and a matter of pride to be associated with. They are;

Home Grown

My Mother is a very passionate botanist and devotes a great deal of time and effort in gardening as a hobby. Over the years her efforts have been made visible by the wonderful garden that she maintains at home. Ooty being a hill-station is a very ideal nursery for many an ornamental plant.

A great deal of effort goes into gardening and upkeep of the patch needs be done much like caring for a new-born baby. Manuring, watering, shading and weeding are some of the many activities one needs to incorporate as part of daily routine so as to produce a desired outcome. Being part of a family that did not have a retinue of attendants, my brother and I would often be summoned to be part of many a garden-maintenance exercise, watering being the worst of all!

I took this picture on August 9, 2004. The flowering season was coming to a close with the advent of the monsoons, which can be nasty in Ooty. These last remaining begonias were wilting under their weight. Eventually the flowers would fall off, the leaves would drop and the plant itself would cease to exist leaving behind tubers that would resume the cycle once again at a different point in time.
