My Values

Watch your character; It becomes your destiny!

-- Pravsworld

We've seen quite a bit about My Documents, My Applications, My Music, My Folders, My Connections, My Files and so on...... I wonder if the list ever ends! No, I certainly do not want to talk about any of those metaphysical aspects of the digital world! Rather, I'm going to harp on how important and significant an asset I consider My Values to be! Sounds old school and possibly archaic? Better, I suppose!

Have you ever wondered how significant you and I are without our integrity? Little? No at all? Or much better, as a lot of people obviously feel, given the fast changing circumstantial world which continues to orient itself more towards the materialistic realm rather than the people part?

If you, like me, find yourself answering two of the former of the three mentioned, then you've won the game of living (purely as per my viewpoint, for I am no authority to prescribe the ways of life), whilst, if you have answered the latter of the three, then I shall choose not to implore upon you to reconsider, for I'm sure this is well thought of on your part!

I'm not one of those who considers my values to be an impediment to my growth, on the contrary, I firmly believe that my deeply entrenched value system enables me to envision a very strong growth path and pattern, one that will be truly rewarding and full of contentment. More importantly, I hope to create a lasting legacy with this wonderful inheritance, thanks to the supremely appreciable efforts of my parents who have at all times, unfailingly, instilled in me the importance of living well, in dignity and as a matter of fact, in the right!

Tell me, would you teach your children something you didn't want to do yourself? Do you not think that it is important to be right than to be nice?

While I'd never teach my kids something that is WRONG and goes against my values, it is not the same thing as teaching my kids something that I didnt WANT to do. u know what I mean Rakesh? Just cos I didnt WANT to do something or didnt think that something was not RIGHT for me, that doesnt mean that that is the ultimate TRUTH, does it?

  6. First --"YOU ARE NOT IMPORTANT TO THE WORLD...YOU ARE IMPORTANT ONLY TO YOURSELF...so if you want to keep your integrity, its a hell of your personal choice --

do I keep up my integrity -- I don't really bother, until the time I am taken for granted! AND THEN ITS OUTRIGHT FIRE! :))

aND then I don't seem to have a chance to see my children grow...no sentiments about; its a fact..

having said that I won't force anything on children, just show them my character...as it unfolds...and character, as someone said, isn't developed during crisis..which means my parents, and all those who have been part of my life have a role in its development..i feel children should learn and develop from what they see around...

whether being nice is more important than being right --I think it depends on the situation, ...and being politically correct often leads to a disintegration of the community...which i seldom favour, for whatsoever reason!

Interesting post, Rak...and i sincerely trust I have succeeded in confusing others...I find it easier to confuse than convince!!

if by any chance you are convinced...please let me know -- I want to know the reason! :))

  8. I don't think I'll teach them anything. Most of the values I share with my parents were never instilled verbally. It reflected on me on its own. I wanted to emulate their goodness ..

  9. Its very important to be right :)
I hope I teach my girls
    always the best !!
They may do what they want to do, I'm not strict :)
I always give them freedom ;)

  10. tend to agree with devika and children grow up with their own minds. one should be open minded enough to give them the freedom to learn what they want. a bit of tweaking now and then should be enough. they grow up much faster than we would like to believe.

  11. You have touched a topic which invites a lot of discussion.First of all I would like to tell you from my personal experience that today's children are very different from those about fifteen to twenty years ago. May be because of the changing lifestyles or whatsoever, children today have become very materialistic. They are more influenced by TV and the internet than by their parents or teachers. I think they would like to consider being nice more important than being right because as far as they are concerned it is the end that matters and not the means...you can imagine the importance they give to values. You can't expect your son/daughter to behave or talk in the same manner when he/she asks for a favor and when you are giving him/her a chore...call it generation gap--right? Now, as far as I am concerned,I would always give more importance to being right than being nice because In my personal opinion I feel that being right will help you in the long term(don't be surprised if your son/daughter asks you as to whether you will live to see that day).Another angle to the point in discussion is that what may be right for me may not be right for another...seems to be situation based. Regarding teaching my child something which is against the values I uphold...I am sure I would not like to do so...but, like I said before, What if he/she believes the other way(Cursing in their mind that I did not grow along with them). I have taken too much of your space...so opting for an abrupt end.

  12. I too keep thinking about (may be write a post in the future too)

Good for you, that you have them intact.

  13. U know rakesh.....we as children always have a set of CORE values....but over a period of time due to situation and time ...we move to adapted values....which suits us...

I wont say that iam a person of all core values...i would say iam a mix of both....[u do have to see ur well being sometimes rite bro?]

  17. ah..one of life's great unanswerable questions..we should meet up some time :)
before i come to your question..there's something that has always bothered me..who decided whats wrong and whats right? you think a particular thing/idea is right cuz you've been brought up under that kinda environment. both of us could be from metros but while I could support homosexuality, you might oppose it. Values are something that can be taught only to an extent. They are 'instilled' in you by your own self..its a way of finding your own self as you grow..hope i'm making some sense..oh i can go on and on about this..used to be my fav topic as a kid..it is..even now! :)

    peace :)

  18. Excellent post, and I agree with you. I always place values higher than anything else. Sometimes, we may get off-track, but it is important to realize and come back! But one thing I learnt the hard way: "It is much easier to suppress the first desire, than to suppress the ones that follow" much like "Form Good habits, they are as hard to break as bad ones". One of these days I want to read Tirrukkural to have a better understanding of this topic!

It is quite something to let kids learn from life, which is a very powerful teacher

Right you are when you say that one's integrity is for oneself to keep and maintain and not for the world
But then, people are known for their personal integrity which is a very strong differentiator, which is very much appreciated.

Having said that it is relative too.......nobody really bothers about another person's integrity unless it becomes questionable

I agree with you when you say that children must not be forced to adopt a stand or a characteristic approach, but tracking back I find myself happier and more recognized as a result of the values I carry which are as a result of my parents' efforts!

It is one things to let children learn from situations, which is good, and quite another to be a guide to help them shape values which will remain in them forever!

Thanks very much for your comments! Appreciate it!

    Cheers

Values are never imparted verbally, they are an exercise, a process rather which is time bound and gradual.

Its great that you provide freedom to your children, which I'm sure is responsible......I view that as a mature act of parenting!

Yes, I agree too! Children should be allowed to grow undisturbed and free from excessive influence! However, parents need to be good guides to smoothen the process too!

Totally agree with your points of view here!

There is a vast difference between the children of today, and those of our times, let alone the ones during the times of our parents and before!

Parents, as mentors need to take cognizance of this and effect good parenting, I suppose! Now that does not mean excessive perks and goodies, it means quality time, mentoring and good guidance at appropriate times!

And yes, values and being right are important in the long run because they eventually tell on a person's character, which comes foremost of all!

While right has these days been characterized as relative, I believe that what is generally right in one place, in the moral and social sense is right every place else!

Thanks for your insights, which are never too long and never space consuming. I wholeheartedly welcome them!

    Cheers

Situations make good and bad people.....however, those values we learn't should help us become better and not otherwise.....for if we turn so, then the system instilled in us is flawed or not strong enough!

We as responsible people need to decide that is right and wrong. It is why we are creatures of judgement and discretion ......don't you think?

But as you said, some issues such as homosexuality, for instance, may be opposed as a result of cultural barriers that a nation has come under!

Being right is an evolutionary process and will require time to mature, quite like good wine ;)

Now, that you know I drink wine......am I a bad person? To some, yes and yet to some others, certainly not!

  35. Its all so subjective Rak...first it mainly depends on what values the parents hold to guide their children!

Your parents could be an exception..so could you be..

I was one who had least intervention from parents...and I am thankful for that :)

I think its the mind of the child thats more important...and Mind is still a mystery, howsoever science has grown!

    devika

    ReplyDelete
  36. Devika Chechi

    Yes, subjective it is!

And I'm sure its quite something to have minimal parental intervention ;)

True that the mind is a mystery..... despite all the sciences that we have so very well mastered....we are still to overcome the many miseries that continue to plague us!

So much for limited human capacity, is it not?

    Cheers

    Rakesh

  37. ha!Hope you didn't mean to say, I'm quite a something!! :)

Yeah, those miseries beyond our capacities that make us remember the Supreme One...

else imagine what a plague of a world man would have turned this world to be!!

Oh no! I certainly did not mean any more than what I said, which is that it is a certain gift to have minimal intervention in one's life!
